This was part of my BFA Fibers Terminal Project at UO, and precurser to "no inside, no outside" [link]

All the fabric is cotton popplin, dyed with synthetic indigo. Some of the techniques used are photo transfers, shibori, sashiko, machine sewing and hand stitching.

My artist statement for the show:

there is a room in my mind
where death and life become one
where the past, present and future collide
where the frivolous categorizations we impose on each other become irrelevant
where the dichotomy of my existance becomes a continuum,
and I am at peace

the outside circle pattern... tye dyed? how did you do that?
Reply
:iconnyankorita:
yes! traditional japanese "tie-dye" technique called "shibori". this particular pattern is called mokume, which is, uh, tree bark pattern. all you do is make a bunch of running stitches going in the same direction, and then you pull the thread tight, and then you dye it. pretty cool eh?

definately!!

i checked out a book from the library about kimonos, and it had a lot fo different details (many of which i didn't understand) but i noticed how important dying was to the process, and the more advanced forms of tye-dying...

Thank you for adding me to your friends list. I am not actively working in fiber art now but I am a classically trained weaver and hope to be building myself a new loom over the next couple of years.
